Skating Equipment
Skates – Skaters who are in Pre-CanSkate, CanSkate, Pre-StarSkate or Teen/Adult CanSkate may use hockey or figure skates. Bob skates and adjustable (grow-with-me) skates are not permitted. Be sure to purchase skates with laces, not the molded plastic skates with buckles. Skaters in the Pre-StarSkate Academy program must have figure skates. Please ensure skates are comfortable and a proper fit. We would recommend purchasing skates and helmets from United Cycle or Professional Skate Services. Skates must be sharpened regularly or at least once per season.
Hockey vs Figure Skates – Both options are great! Keep in mind though, switching from hockey to figure skates later on can be a hard transition and may set the skater back.
Helmet – All skaters in our CanSkate (Pre-CanSkate, CanSkate, Pre-StarSkate, Pre-StarSkate Academy and Teen/Adult CanSkate) programs are required to have a CSA approved helmet that is no more than 5 years old. Please refer to the sticker on the back of the helmet to ensure your helmet is not expired. Skaters are required to wear CSA approved helmets until they have earned the Stage 5 badge and have permission from their coach.
“An athlete gains so much knowledge by just participating in a sport. Focus, discipline, hard work, goal setting and, of course, the thrill of finally achieving your goals. These are all lessons in life.”
